The problem here lies in the fact there just isn’t enough variety to justify taking these challenges over and over again.Īfter about 4 or 5 random crimes, I felt like I had seen most of what the open world challenges had to offer. To level up players are forced to engage with menial open world crimes to unlock the bigger “premeditated” crimes. This wouldn’t inherently be a problem if leveling didn’t feel like a grind and the gear system was explained more thoroughly rather than players navigating a messy UI to understand the intricacies of it all. Story and side missions are locked behind level requirements that you are forced to meet to actively engage with them. Where to even begin with what happened here? Players are asked to engage with a crafting and gear system that allows you to equip your chosen Knight with a suit, melee and ranged weapon that increases their power level and base stats and allows them to take on high level missions. Leveled enemies can at times feel very spongy and some boss encounters are so poorly designed that I started questioning if I was playing the encounter wrong. Where the game begins to stumble is in its gameplay design choices. Gotham Knights attempts to differentiate itself from most superhero games by having a full customizable gear system and having the game be full co-op. Players then go on nightly patrols in a fully open rendition of Gotham City and investigate the mysterious circumstances behind the death of the Dark Knight as well as other villains who see his death as an opportunity to wreak havoc in the city. Gotham Knights puts you into the boots of Batman’s closest allies: Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood and Robin, as they pick up the call of Justice after Batman’s death. If the Arkham games are the Burton films, Gotham Knights feels like a Schumacher film… for better or worse. Unfortunately for these Knights, the game struggles to stand apart due to a myriad of issues. In many ways the development and resulting game are put in the same situation living in the shadow of the sublime Batman Arkham video games. I suppose it's a lot more RPG, though, with all the stats and numbers popping out of enemies when you hit them. Even just the mixture of combat and investigative stuff too. The game looks like it would fit right into Rocksteady's Arkham series, what with its open-world Gotham, and combat where you're pinging between fellas who encircle you. The devs also switch to Red Hood's perspective on the level later, and it seems like he's tackled things differently which should appease fans of replayability. And while it's not groundbreaking stuff, it works and it's something that I'm a sucker for. A Witcher-sense-esque button lets you scan the environment for clues like blood trails and hidden buttons. Perhaps the strongest part of the whole video is Night Wing's stealthy raid on an enemy hideout. It's particularly noticeable in Night Wing's lair, with shafts of light cutting across the floorboards in a way that can only be described as delectable. Gotham is gloomy and gorgeous too, with some lovely lighting. But hey, if they get the gear side of things right, it's a surefire way to reel me in for those rewards. Then you've got the RPG side of things, with coloured gear and rarities and suits that make numbers go up, a bit like your Assassin's Creed nowadays. It seems like Gotham will have plenty of activities to crack on with, as we get a glimpse of a big map and its many markers. Red Hood is the buff one, who shoots people in cool ways and can bound across Gotham's rooftops with strong Crackdown energy. Night Wing is the gymnastic one, who bounces between enemies with flips and spin-kicks. Yeah, Gotham Knights looks strong! The new gameplay footage flits between superheroes Night Wing and Red Hood as they engage in fisticuffs and do some investigating.
